No man is an island – and we like to believe that too! In our late 20s, we find ourselves sometimes lonely in the city, and stranger inside of it. Our friends are partnering up with other people, while sometimes, we wonder where can we meet the people who we’ll stroll the city with.
A lot of us, especially the girlies out there, romanticized TV shows like Sex and The City and Friends where the characters are all grown up and having fun and are very attached to the hip. But in real life? Finding your tribe in adulthood can be quite lonely, especially with some of us working remotely.
However, if you want to have friends, you need to put yourself in more social situations. Fortunately, we’ve rounded a list for them!
Go To Events
Events are great ways to meet people, regardless of their kind of nature. For personal ones, there are weddings and engagement parties, and then there are ones for work like Christmas parties, anniversary events, and dinners, where you can socialize with your workmates and get to know them a bit better.
Then there are also events for recreation, hobbies but are also linked to certain industries. A lot of influencers (content creators and key opinion leaders) attend these kinds of events.
There are also others, like conventions for hobbyists. In any kind of event, it is an opportunity to make new friends and people. Hobbyist events are the ones we recommend that you attend more – you’ve got higher chances here of being able to meet someone closer to your hobbies and likes.
Get Into New Hobbies
It’s always a good idea to try something new – a new hobby, a new skill, a new learning process, and a potential for a lot of improvement. It can range from e bingo to calligraphy to art. You can attend Pilates classes, fitness classes – and these hobby/skill classes.
Who knows, you might find new people there too!
Tinder and Other Social Apps
This might sound desperate but Tinder doesn’t mean that it’s a total disaster. Some of the best couples I know hit it off right at Tinder; a successful CEO I know met her husband there during her first day while a couple close to my age, they found each other on Tinder.
Some people might start out as friends there, while others go at hanging out right away.
Link Up With People
According to Meg Jay’s book, Defining Your 20s, in adulthood, you can make use of your links. The links that are weakest turn out to be the ones that give you the most substance. For example, you need a way inside a company, and there’s one person you know in that company who you are not close to.
Wrapping Up
If you want to find your tribe, you need to put yourself in more social situations and putting in the work. Thanks to adulthood, we can afford it. The work, however, majority of it lies in our hands.
